Monofilament Line
Here are a few tips that beginners should follow to keep their monofilament line in the best possible condition. A tip from an experienced fisher: an angler is only as good as his equipment.
- Sunlight weakens monofilament. It is important that you do not leave in direct sunlight when you are not using it.
- Pronglonged heat will weaken the monofilament as well. A general rule is to never store your line or rods in hot areas like car boots, the back of a car, attics etc.
- Don't let your monofilament line come in contact with gasoline, oil, suntan lotion, or other harmful chemicals as they will damage it. These cause the monofilament line to break down or become brittle.
- Even with proper care and normal use, remember that a monofilament line will age. It is therefore a good idea to periodically strip and replace an old line. Two changes a year should be sufficient for a typical weekend fisher.
- Be on constant guard against nicks abrasions or other weak spots. You can detect these spots by running the monofilament line through your thumb and forefinger.
