The ability to hide your scent and make minimal noise and movements are key factors while out in the bushes deer hunting. Keeping the noise down and reducing the amount of movement you make while hunting are easy enough to accomplish. However, it's not as easy to hide your scent from the always alert deer. Reason being is you don't have as much control of your scent as you would of your movements. You're also at the mercy of the constantly changing wind direction which aids the deer in detecting your scent. Try to keep the deer upwind of you to decrease the chances of the deer smelling your scent. Unfortunately, changing with the wind direction involves the hunter making extra movements; another advantage for the deer.
A deer's sense of smell is one of it's greatest forms of defense against a hunting party. Man has a distinct scent and deer are very keen on detecting these scents. It is said that, in the right conditions, the deer are able to detect the scent of hunters from hundreds of yards away. There are many hunting products out there that can help to cover or mask a hunter's scent from the deer. These, however, are not foolproof and an experienced hunter should always stay on top of the wind direction.
Keeping track of the wind's directional changes is a must in order to keep your scent from the deer. Even the lightest breezes can carry a hunter's scent a long way. Some hunting experts make use of butane lighters as well as a fine scentless powder that will uncover the direction of the wind. Another effective method to detect wind direction is to tie a small feather onto a thin string, floss will do, and attach it to yourself or your weapon. Whatever method you choose, make sure it is very quiet, involves as little movement as possible, and emits little or no scent.
